Graduates of other domestic and foreign universities may also enroll in doctoral studies in accordance with the prescribed conditions, as apply to students of the Republic of Slovenia. The equivalence of previously acquired education abroad is established in the procedure of recognition of foreign education for continuing education in accordance with the provisions of the UL Statute. |

General competences:
Through the contents of the study, which combines theoretical and practical elements of selected scientific disciplines and combines a variety of modern didactic approaches and individual and group ways of acquiring, using and applying knowledge, third level students develop the following competences:
- analytical (ability to independently perform highly demanding analytical work, analysis of social phenomena, advice on various trends in social events, development and management, synthesis of field knowledge and their use in solving specific problems, ability to synthesize and contextualize analytical findings);
- use of methodological tools (independent implementation, coordination, management and organization of research, use and further development of various research methods and techniques, autonomy and self-initiative in research work);
- knowledge of the environment of the chosen field, discipline (very broad, critical and reflective understanding of the chosen environment, structures and operation, (legal) norms, institutions and dynamics of development);
- strategic orientation in the chosen field (high ability to plan, evaluate and look to the future, anticipate the development of events, separate the essential from the insignificant and find more lasting solutions to fundamental problems);
- communicativeness (ability to properly present research achievements, excellent ability of written expression, public presentation and argumentation, speech expression, clear, active and argumentative performance);
- team and group work (team and / or group leadership, willingness to cooperate, cooperation, taking into account the opinions of others and fulfilling the agreed role within the team and / or group);
- professionalism (analysis, sequencing and coordination of work tasks and selection of methods and ways of working in accordance with the standards of the profession);
- conflict resolution (conflict management, management and mediation, ability to negotiate, argue and formulate negotiating positions);
- flexible management of change (flexible operation in all social environments, in different cultural contexts and in cooperation with foreign countries, interdisciplinarity, understanding of cultural plurality);
- networking (the ability to make contacts inside and outside the organization, managing formal and informal relationships);
- developed scientific research ethics and humanistic values at work in all work environments;
- a broad humanistic social science horizon and the ability for quality interdisciplinary research work.
Subject specific competences:
Subject-specific competences are linked to individual study fields of humanities and social sciences and thus to the subjects of individual fields. They are listed in the curricula for each subject separately.
In accordance with Article 138 of the Statute of the University of Ljubljana, the method of assessment in the doctoral programme is defined only according to the general guidelines:
- the obligation is fulfilled / pass
- the obligation is not fulfilled / fail
Students' knowledge is checked and assessed by individual subjects and other forms of study, as provided for in the individual curriculum.
The condition for progressing from the first to the second year is the fulfillment of all obligations of organized forms of teaching in the first year (Basic subject I, Basic subject II, Doctoral seminar I, Doctoral seminar II) in the total amount of 40 ECTS.
The condition for progressing from the second to the third year is the fulfillment of the obligation of the organized form of teaching in the second year (External elective subject) in the amount of 10 ECTS and the obtained consent of the Senate of the University of Ljubljana to the topic of the doctoral dissertation.
In order to complete the study and obtain the scientific title of Doctor of Science, students must successfully complete all study obligations determined by the programme and successfully defend the doctoral dissertation in the total amount of 180 ECTS. The obligation of the doctoral student is to publish at least one scientific article or contribution from the field of doctoral dissertation in a publication recognized by individual scientific disciplines as relevant. The doctoral student must be the first author of the article or contribution, and the scientific article or contribution must be published or accepted for publication prior to the defense of the doctoral dissertation.
The doctoral dissertation is the result of a multi-year research project. It must represent an original contribution to science, which is positively evaluated by the doctoral dissertation evaluation committee. In particular, the dissertation must follow three principles: the problem under consideration must be relevant, the student must master the research methodology and the results must be an original contribution to science.
