In the event that there are more applicants for the programme than places available, the selection of candidates for enrolment in the interdisciplinary doctoral study programme Environmental Protection will be based on: results in a pre-Bologna academic higher education programme or a second-cycle programme (50%) (of which 40% for an average grade of 8 or more in a pre-Bologna academic higher education programme or second-cycle programme and 10% for a grade of 9 or 10 in the bachelor's or master's thesis); success in the selection examination (50%) (of which 30% for the presentation of the topic of the doctoral dissertation and 20% for proof of research and awards to date). |

Qualification holders are qualified to:
(general competences)
- pursue creative and independent scientific research work and solve complex scientific problems using an interdisciplinary approach,
- critically evaluate research results, develop new research methods and transfer new technologies and knowledge into practice,
(subject-specific competences)
- resolve complex and demanding research questions from various fields of environmental protection and develop new research methods,
- demonstrate understanding and critical judgement when addressing specific research problems and integrate and apply scientific methods from various fields of science,
- undertake autonomous research,
- resolve specific work problems through the application of modern scientific methods and procedures,
- seek new solutions and lead the most complex research and other projects.
Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).
In order to progress from the first year to the second year of the doctoral programme, doctoral candidates must have completed course units consisting of at least 45 credits. At least 30 of these credits must be from compulsory methodological work and core subjects.
Candidates who have completed all taught course units from the first and second years may enrol in the third year of the doctoral programme. A further condition for enrolment in the third year is a completed doctoral seminar with a successful presentation of the topic of the doctoral dissertation and the results of work to date, and approval of the dissertation topic by the UL senate.
In order to complete the programme and obtain the academic title of doktor/doktorica znanosti, candidates must successfully complete all course units defined by the programme and successfully defend a doctoral dissertation, for a total of 180 credits. Doctoral candidates must publish at least one scholarly article as lead author. The scholarly article must be published or accepted for publication in internationally recognised journals of individual disciplines before the defence of the doctoral dissertation.
