The qualification holder will be able to:

(general competences)

• take responsibility for the performance of the direct duties of deck officers on ships of over 500 gross tons (3rd deck officer and 2nd deck officer) and of the 1st deck officer and commander on ships of over 3,000 gross tons,
• observe the watchkeeping standards prescribed by the STCW International Convention in accordance with Section A-II of the STCW Code – general knowledge,
• demonstrate analytical skills in addressing professional tasks: work autonomously and analytically (in particular in connection with the development of new technologies),
• synthesise specific areas of knowledge and apply them in addressing specific problems, and at the same time synthesise and place analytical findings in real contexts,
• acquire methodological knowledge and learning regarding the use of methods of research and analysis, show creativity and initiative in selecting and analysing key security problems in the supervision of maritime navigation,
• think strategically, plan, evaluate and look to the future, foresee and predict the development of events, seek solutions to fundamental problems,
• express themselves orally and in writing and use technical nautical and navigation-related terminology in Slovene and English at an advanced level,
• negotiate, argue and formulate negotiating positions,
• cooperate, respect the opinions of others and fulfil an agreed role within a team or group,
• organise, work with co-workers, advise and manage,
• demonstrate creativity, positive understanding and empathy with other cultures, form contacts and manage formal and informal relationships, cooperate and synergistically integrate differences in group to create a new quality,
• work flexibly in multicultural environments and in cooperation with other countries – for interdisciplinarity and understanding of cultural plurality,
• analyse, determine a sequence, coordinate work tasks and select methods and modes of work in accordance with the standards of the profession,
• use maritime information technology, implement more complex procedures

(subject-specific competences)

• acquire basic knowledge of natural science subjects, enabling their implementation in basic specialised and orientation subjects for the study and addressing of maritime processes,
• acquire basic and applied knowledge from subjects with content relating to maritime economics, the operations of shipowners, human resources, etc., enabling their application in addressing problems of human resources management or leadership and communication skills (ability to form contacts, etc.), and demonstrate understanding of cultural plurality,
• apply basic and applied knowledge of subjects with contents relating to the field of economic, international maritime and administrative maritime law, nautical law and insurance, enabling their application in the addressing of problems relating to transport contracts and other necessary documentation in internal and international maritime transport, demonstrate familiarity with the business and legal environment of organisations, companies and other entities in the maritime sector, demonstrate understanding of business and legal processes,
• acquire basic and applied knowledge from subjects containing maritime English, enabling knowledge of foreign languages and argumentation and negotiating skills that give a special comparative advantage or leadership and communication skills (ability to form contacts, etc.),
• apply basic and applied knowledge of contents relating to: coastal, ocean and electronic navigation, ship knowledge, cargo handling, ship construction and equipment, aboard ship, seamanship, training on nautical simulators, navigation watchkeeping, communication devices, etc., enabling the performance of the following functions: navigation, cargo handling and distribution, control of ship navigation, responsibility for personnel aboard ship and radio communications at the following levels of responsibility: management level and operational level,
• acquire basic and applied knowledge in subjects with contents relating to seamanship, training on nautical simulators, navigation watchkeeping, communications devices, etc., enabling professional competence for tasks allocated for the handling of equipment which is urgently necessary for safe navigation, safe radio communications, emergency conditions or prevention of marine pollution,
• acquire specific knowledge from subjects within the group of elective subjects relating to maritime law, Ro-Ro and passenger ships, communications devices, ARPA simulator, cargo handling, tactical navigation and maritime heritage and the acquisition of the necessary knowledge and skills from the field of professional practice for the high-quality incorporation into their work of professional challenges in navigation practice.
