Admission requirements Entry conditions:
  • Completed second level study programme.
  • Completed study programme for obtaining a higher professional education, adopted before 11 June 2004, and study programme for obtaining a specialization. Prior to enrollment in the study programme, such candidates are assigned study obligations in the amount of 41 ECTS credits. These obligations are subjects from the master's study programme of the second level of Security Studies: Strategic Management and Supervision of Security Organizations (8 ECTS), Methodology of Social Research and Multivariate Statistical Methods (10 ECTS), Criminology and Crime Policy (8 ECTS), Criminology and Forensic Sciences ( 8 ECTS), Private Security Industry (7 ECTS).
  • Completed a uniform master's study programme that educates for professions regulated by EU directives, or another uniform master's study programme valued at 300 ECTS.
  • Completed study programme for obtaining a university education, adopted before 11 June 2004.

General competences:

  • ability to analyze, synthesize and predict solutions and consequences in the areas covered by the protection science;
  • autonomy in scientific research and a critical view of security issues;
  • communication skills, in particular communication skills in the domestic and international scientific environment;
  • understanding of modern security and crime problems through the prism of classical and modern concepts and contextualization of problems;
  • use systemic concepts in understanding and defining problems;
  • understand the social, psychological, philosophical, economic, historical, legal and political aspects of crime, the deviance and operation of law enforcement, law enforcement and other national oversight bodies;
  • transfer of theoretical knowledge into everyday practice and the ability to synthesize knowledge of security science and other related sciences;
  • development of ethical standards for high quality and professional autonomous work;
  • development of communication skills for successful work in situations of interdependence in both national and international environment.

Subject-specific competences:

  • detecting, analyzing and resolving security-related problems while respecting human rights, the rule of law and the rule of law;
  • mastery of general and specific research methods in the study of various security phenomena, and the ability of basic and applied research of security phenomena in local communities, organizations and internationally;
  • an in-depth understanding of the relevant relations between law enforcement agencies and other actors in the national security and intelligence system;
  • studying the extent and nature of crime and other deviant phenomena in society;
  • studying the enforcement of criminal law and ways to ensure security;
  • studying the practice of performing police activity; the operation of prosecutors' offices, courts and the enforcement of criminal sanctions;
  • studying other social control mechanisms in modern society and ensuring private, public, internal and international security.
  • understanding security issues and activities at the global, continental, national, regional and local levels;
  • investigating the causes, carrying out surveillance activities, responding to crime and offenders;
  • understanding of the country's internal security systems and internal security systems in the international community.

Assesment and completion:

Students' knowledge is assessed by means of practical classes and seminar papers, and also via products, projects, performances, services, etc. and by examinations. Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

Progression from the first to the second year

To progress from the first year to the second year, a student must collect at least 40 ECTS, and must pass examinations in the following subjects:

  • Research methods in security science (10 ECTS)
  • Participation in the conference with a contribution (10 ECTS)
  • Individual research work 1 (20 ECTS)

Individual research work is primarily intended for the preparation of a doctoral thesis and is usually led by a proposed mentor (also a co-mentor). Individual research work 1 was successfully performed after a positive assessment of the disposition of the doctoral thesis at a meeting of the competent department. When the disposition is ready for presentation is decided by the mentor. The disposition may be accepted or rejected at the meeting. Doctoral students must submit the latest version of the doctoral dissertation disposition in electronic form to the paper.

Progression from second to third year

To progress from the second to the third year, a student must collect 30 ECTS from the obligations of the current year, and must pass examinations in the following subjects:

  • Studies in the field of security science (30 ECTS) or
  • individual research work 2 (30 ECTS).

Individual research work 2 is successfully completed when a positive assessment of the expert commission on the disposition of the doctoral thesis is obtained, when the assessment is confirmed by the Senate of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Senate of the University of Maribor. This condition also applies to students who are directly enrolled in the 2nd year. To progress to the third year, the student must also complete all the obligations of the first year.

Individual research work 3 was successfully completed after obtaining a positive assessment of the expert commission on the doctoral dissertation and the adoption of a decision at the session of the Senate of the FVV. A student who has not fulfilled all obligations may, at the request of the FVV Scientific Research Commission, exceptionally approve enrollment in a higher year if he / she fulfills at least half of the obligations (30 ECTS) and if he / she could not fulfill the obligations for justified reasons (Article 85 of UM Statute).

 

Conditions for obtaining a public document:

The student successfully completes the study after completing all the obligations prescribed by the study programme and thus collects a total of 240 ECTS, submitted a written doctoral dissertation and successfully defends it publicly.
