The qualification holder will be able to:

  • autonomously learn and develop professionally,
  • think in an analytical and synthetic manner,
  • master research methods of interlingual studies and translatology,
  • combine the methodology of intercultural studies and translatology with the methodology of another discipline, in order to obtain new research results,

 (subject-specific competences)

  • master the standard English and Slovenian spelling and pronunciation,
  • master and understand morphemic, morphological and lexical categories, demonstrate knowledge of syntactic and textual structure of both languages,
  • understand word-formation, semantic and phraseological relations in the English and Slovenian language from the point of view of modern theoretical approaches in linguistics,
  • demonstrate knowledge of older and modern flows of the English and Slovenian literature,
  • independently follow current linguistic and literary phenomena, and put them in the context of already acquired knowledge of both languages,
  • publicly engage in encouraging a higher written and reading culture in Slovenian,
  • demonstrate knowledge in the fields of history, culture, media, education and economy of the English-speaking area and Slovenian territory,
  • perform a contrastive analysis of texts and phenomena on the basis of the previously acquired knowledge of the stated fields from an intercultural point of view,
  • offer arguments for possible translations in the language pair English–Slovenian from the point of view of translatologic and theoretical models,
  • search and use parallel texts,
  • make glossaries,
  • use electronic accessories and manuals,
  • translate medium complex texts from various fields from English to Slovenian on the basis of functional approach,
  • translate less complex texts from Slovenian to English on the basis of functional approach,
  • create alternative translations,
  • argument the existing and possible literary translations in the language pair Slovenian–English on the basis of expressive approach,
  • translate less and medium complex literary texts from English in Slovenian on the basis of finding out the basic stylistic characteristics of texts,
  • demonstrate knowledge of strategies and methods of shortening and adaptation in subtitling and synchronisation,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the techniques of consecutive, simultaneous and whispered interpreting,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the technique for making written notes in the consecutive interpreting,
  • perform consecutive, simultaneous and whispered interpreting of less complex texts,
  • demonstrate knowledge of fundamental principles and goals of the most important international organisations,
  • autonomously follow current world events and put international organisations in this context,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental principles of professional ethics and find meaning for ethical values in the discipline,

  • create a professional awareness and be familiar with the role of a professional interlingual officer and translator.

Assesment and completion:

Students' knowledge is assessed by means of practical exercises and seminar papers, and also via products, projects, performances, services, etc. and by examinations. Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

In order to progress to the second year students must accumulate at least 24 credits in the suggested study programme and a certain number of credits, prescribed by the second part of the double-subject study programme. In order to enrol in the third year students must accumulate at least 24 credits in the suggested study programme and a certain number of credits, prescribed by the second part of the double-subject study programme, and complete all the exams from the first year.

Second-cycle master's study programmes (SQF level 8)

Conditions for obtaining a public document:

Students complete the combined-subject study programme when they have completed all the requirements prescribed by the study programme in both parts of the double-subject study programme, accumulating in total 180 credits (90 credits in each individual subject of the double-subject study programme).
