Admission requirements

The conditions for enrolment are in line with the University of Ljubljana Statute which in Article 117 stipulates that in order to enrol in the master’s study programme candidates must have completed:

  • a first-cycle study programme in a relevant professional field, defined by the master’s study programme;
  • a first-cycle study programme from other professional fields, if prior to the enrolment they have fulfilled the study requirements in the extent of 10 to 60 credits, which are essential for the continuation of the studies and are defined by the study programme.
  • Candidates may complete the requirements from the second indent of the previous paragraph during the first-cycle programme, during supplementary study programmes or by passing differential examinations before enrolment in the master's programme.

In order to enrol in the master’s programme Translation, candidates must have:

  • a diploma in Interlingual Mediation of a relevant stream according to the chosen stream of the master’s programme (the selected languages in the master’s programme must match the selected languages in the undergraduate programme);
  • a university diploma from any field, including undergraduate programmes, structured in line with Bologna guidelines, as well as those from before the higher education reform; candidates must pass an examination verifying linguistic competences in Slovenian and two other languages (according to the chosen study stream); on the basis of the acquired competences during undergraduate studies and the examination results 60 credits may be granted or added.

Subject-specific competences

Students will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and mastery of translation strategies and techniques;
  • describe and theoretically analyse translation processes;
  • recognise the interconnectedness of empirical research with theoretical translational premisses;
  • recognise fundamental texts and theoretical starting points in the history of translation theories;
  • form an independent view on a status of a translated text, translator and translation;
  • use translation tools;
  • demonstrate textual competences in Slovenian and two other languages according to the specifics of textual and communication conventions;
  • understand and analyse textual communication processes in society;
  • understand interdependent functioning of texts from civilizational and cultural social context on a higher level.

Additional subject-specific competences are defined in a form for curriculum for each individual subject.

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

In order to progress to the second year of the master’s study Translation, students translate must have completed in full all course units prescribed by the curriculum and individual syllabuses for the first year, for a total of 60 credits.

Third-cycle doctoral study programmes (SQF level 10)

Conditions for completing the studies:

  • accumulated 120 credits,
  • fulfilled all requirements, prescribed by the syllabus and curricula,
  • master’s examination,
  • translation from two foreign languages into Slovenian, and from Slovenian into two foreign languages with an oral presentation,
  • master’s thesis with an oral defence.
