Admission requirements
  • A completed undergraduate study programme consisting of 240 credits in social sciences, journalism and information science, law or humanities; or
  • a completed first-cycle study programme in another field consisting of 240 credits, if the candidate completes course units essential for further study totalling up to 40 credits (8 subjects); or
  • a completed first-cycle study programme in any field in which the candidate has completed 180 credits if prior to enrolment in the second cycle at the Faculty of Social Sciences he or she has passed examinations totalling 60 credits as part of the Programme for Upgrading Social Sciences-Related Knowledge in subjects selected by agreement with the programme administrator; or
  • a completed four-year professional higher education programme offered before the introduction of the Bologna reform and completed by the 2015/2016 academic year at the latest, in one of the fields listed in the first indent; or
  • a completed four-year professional higher education programme in another filed offered before the introduction of the Bologna reform and completed by the 2015/2016 academic year at the latest; candidates must complete the subjects from the Social Sciences Preparatory Programme that are listed in the second indent; or
  • a completed three-year professional higher education programme offered before the introduction of the Bologna reform and completed by the 2015/2016 academic year at the latest; candidates may enrol in the master's programme under the conditions specified in the third indent.

The qualification holder will be able to:

(general competences)

  • demonstrate mastery of in-depth knowledge for research and analytical work related to social communication at the interpersonal and institutional levels and with the mass media,
  • apply this knowledge in the context of a research practicum,

(subject-specific competences)

  • carry out independent research covering all phases of communication studies research from concept and planning to implementation of research and writing a report, giving emphasis to both the theoretical design and diversity of communication studies research and the operationalisation and implementation of empirical research.

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

The programme has a one-year duration so there is no progression to subsequent years.

Third-cycle doctoral study programmes (SQF level 10)

In order to complete the programme, students must complete all course units in all subjects in which they have enrolled and successfully defend a master's thesis via a public presentation.
