The qualification holder will be able to: 
  • demonstrate intercultural awareness,
  • go beyond a Eurocentric understanding of the world,
  • respect difference in the broadest sense,
  • be innovative in interpersonal relations,
  • demonstrate proficiency in communication skills,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the basic characteristics of Japanese culture and the structure of Japanese society,
  • work in a Slovene-Japanese interlingual and intercultural environment,
  • passively use around 6,000 of the commonest words (of which around 4,000 actively), passively use around 1,450 of the characters (of which around 1,000 actively) used to write these words, and demonstrate mastery of the main grammatical patterns of modern Japanese,
  • use both syllabic forms of writing (hiragana and katakana),
  • demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental principles of the use of Japanese in various social contexts at various levels of formality,
  • demonstrate understanding of texts on general social and popular science topics,
  • translate simple texts from Japanese into Slovene,
  • undertake less complex interlingual mediation between Slovene and Japanese,
  • use ICT in connection with Japanese: computer processing of texts, internet and electronic dictionaries.

Students' knowledge is assessed by means of practical exercises and seminar papers, and also via products, projects, performances, services, etc. and by examinations. Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

In order to progress to the second year, students must have completed all course units prescribed by the curriculum and individual syllabuses for the first year, for a total of 60 credits (30 credits in each of the chosen subjects of the two-subject programme). In order to progress from the second to the third year, students must have completed all course units prescribed by the curriculum and individual syllabuses for the second year, amounting to 60 credits, in other words a total of 120 credits for the first and second years (60 credits in each subject of the two-subject programme).

Second-cycle master's study programmes (SQF level 8)

Students must complete all course units prescribed by the study programme and the syllabuses of individual subjects, for a total of 90 credits. The overall programme is only completed when students have completed all course units in both chosen disciplines, as laid down by the study programmes and syllabuses of individual subjects, for a total of 180 credits.
